A key feature about all inflatable boats is their incredible stability. Conventional dinghies and small sport boats rock almost uncontrollably whenever anyone moves about. Inflatables, with their buoyancy tubes, sit flat in the water and are almost impossible to flip over. This offers a feeling of security to even the most nervous boaters and allows swimmers or divers to slide back on board without upsetting the boat. More buoyancy of inflatable boats means bigger load-carrying capacity. Inflatable boats are designed with built-in buoyancy. The inflatable collar, or tubeset, is the key that allows inflatable boats to carry very heavy payloads in a safe and stable manner. An added benefit is that they are virtually unsinkable, and can generally operate even with one or more chambers of the collar deflated.
Most monohulls larger than a dinghy require ballast, depending on the design ballast will be 20 to 50 percent of the displacement. The ballast is often integrated into their keels as large masses of lead or cast iron. This secures the ballast and gets it as low as possible to improve it's effectivness. External keels are cast in the shape of the keel. A monohull's keel is made effective by a combination of weight, depth and length.

I need 2 or 3 sailing crew for Seattle to Hawaii and on to Guam. I will depart from Seattle/Port Angeles on or about 1 September and leave the boat in Guam. The boat is a 42 ft Cheoy Lee, well outfitted and solid. I am expecting to allow 2 months for the trip to Guam including 10 days port time in Hawaii for refitting and repair.

Manual vs Electric Windlass For Sailing Yacht?

From all of your experience is it feasible to use a manual windlass or are the 12 volt models the only way to go on a sailing yacht? The cost of the manual models is so much less that i would like to go that way. I have just found out the hard way that pulling up and anchor and chain by hand in a windward anchorage can be difficult and dangerous. Thanks for your thoughts.

Building an inflatable boat is complex, and expensive and is best left to the professionals. Building your own boat will likely cost more than buying one and could prove to be a safety hazard as well. Insuring it or passing government inspections/regulations my be difficult also. Patterns for the sections of the inflatable collar are hard to get and it is unlikely a manufacturer will supply them or that a dealer would have them. However, if you really want to try, a dealer will likely sell you the fabric, glue, parts, etc.

Boat Fenders For A Sailing Yacht, cylindrical or spherical?

Is there a practical reason why some cruisers choose round over cylindrical (or vice versa) fenders for a sailing yacht? I have been told the guide for fender size is 2.5cm per 1.5m (1" per 5') of boat length for cylindrical, and 5cm per 1.5m (2" per 5') for round; is this an effective measure? Some sailors also seem to think that suspending fenders from the hand railings/wire between staunchions is poor seamanship...is there a modern reason why this may be true?

Concern for Americans whilst sailing around the world?

Link] I am growing increasingly concerned over the reception for Americans sailing around the world. I really don't see venturing farther than the Caribbean, or Gulf of Mexico, but am still concerned. What is your opinion of where we should and shouldn't go?
